The transition with my first baby was the hardest! My whole life was really about me until I became a mom 😳 you are right, it is such a blessing but also so hard.
You suddenly realise that your nights, your time, they’re not negotiable anymore because you’re up at all hours 😅 I get this! I realised how self centred I must’ve been! I think it really is a rude awakening.
I have been reflecting on this so much with the Lord, especially after becoming a mom for the first time! Thank you for sharing this. I will be sending to another mom friend of mine ❤️
And honestly, this shows such discernment and wisdom in your first time as a mum! It took me so long to stop acting as if I had to somehow enforce joy and mask the hardship. Even now I often weigh up if someone actually needs to hear how I’m struggling or if I give the typically expected ‘I’m fine, thanks’ reply.
I am so glad this felt close to your own experience and that you can share it with another friend too 🤗
I’m still trying to let go of the guilt when I am not feeling happy about all aspects of motherhood. I think it helps to know that even in those moments I DO still have joy overall.
I guess if we were happy all the time we’d have near perfect kids, and that seems very unlikely 😆 at the end of the day nothing in life is competely happy, whether a relationship or a job, etc, there’s always moments of sadness or hardship etc - I guess we just have to stop holding motherhood to an impossible standard that we don’t hold those other areas to! 💕
'That we too held and still hold that burden and blessing of both suffering and joy'.
Jessica this is such a great piece of writing. This is exactly it. Becoming a mother can be both a wonderful and soul destroying experience. Both miraculous and devastating.
I’m so glad that you felt this deeply, that it was so true for you. It really is both, simultaneously, and that in itself is hard to even articulate sometimes to those who have yet to experience it!
I love being a mum, but it is also the hardest thing I have to battle with the most in my life.
This resonated with me! We’ve dealt with the reflux, the “colic” etc which were/are hard, but we do still have so much joy and love. It’s taught me to pay closer attention to my mom friends who have/are having babies. I check-in on them more, let them know they’re not alone and that all those feelings are ones I’ve had too.
And I think that is exactly what needs to be done; more checking in to see how new mums are and not glossing over the real hardships while only showing the best parts. They need to know life is like this and we’ve all been there!
